Author's Biography

Attorney Honey Hastings opened her law practice in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire in 1982. In 1983, she co-founded the Family Law Section of the New Hampshire Bar Association. More recently, Hastings co-founded the Collaborative Law Alliance of New Hampshire, and has served as its president.

photo of HH Her practice has embraced many aspects of family law: divorce, legal separation, post-divorce, parenting (custody), child support/alimony, property division (including retirement benefits), unwed families, paternity, grandparents' rights, interstate/international child abduction, interstate family disputes, premarital agreements, adoption, guardianships of minors, and family law appellate work.

Since 2005, Ms. Hastings has restricted her practice to helping people resolve conflicts using collaborative practice, mediation, unbundled legal services, and parenting coordination. She no longer handles litigated divorces or parenting cases, but advises people in these situations. She has also been called as an expert witness in lawyer discipline and malpractice cases.

She is a member of the New Hampshire Conflict Resolution Association, and is an Advanced Practitioner in Family Mediation of the Association for Conflict Resolution. She received her JD in 1980 from Boston College Law School and her BA from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania in 1967. After graduation from law school, she drafted bills for the New Hampshire Legislature. She is admitted to the bars of New Hampshire, the Federal District Court of New Hampshire, the First Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States.

Ms. Hastings writes about family law topics for lay people, lawyers, mediators, and mental health professionals, using the "plain language" that has been a hallmark of her practice. Her articles have appeared in various American Bar Association and New Hampshire Bar Association publications. The second edition of The New Hampshire Divorce Handbook was published in 2007. She speaks on family law issues, to both lay and professional audiences, on topics such as parental rights and responsibilities, retirement plans, child support laws, bankruptcy and divorce. Through Amoskeag Continuing Education, she presents continuing education programs approved for lawyers, mediators, and mental health professionals.

Attorney Hastings is an avid gardener, conservationist, and participant in town government.
